What made your portfolio project earn real interview conversations?

I am rebuilding my portfolio this month and do not want another generic clone. I would rather build one thing deeply, with a clear product story and technical trade-offs.

For people who received interview interest from a project, what was the signal? Was it user traction, a hard engineering problem, a public write-up, or simply the quality of execution?

Mine was not flashy. I built a scheduling tool for a student club, interviewed the users, tracked the drop-off point, and wrote about why I changed the data model. The signal was ownership — I could defend every decision.

A public engineering note gave people a better entry point than the project itself. Show the before/after, constraints, and what you would do with another week.
